Custom-Coated for Performance: ABET & Belzona Houston Collaborate on Abrasive-Duty Pump Project

When it comes to custom work that requires specialized collaboration, look no further than your local technicians at ABET!

A recent example: One of our great customers has a series of pumps that operate in a highly abrasive application and wanted to experiment with various metallic and elastomeric polymers to determine which combination would be most sustainable and appropriate for their specific operating environment. The subject pumps are Summit 2196R pumps featuring an ANSI power end with a recessed impeller style casing and impeller. For this project, ABET technicians prepared the pumps and did all the pre-machining while BHI (Belzona Houston, Inc.) performed the actual coating.

As pictured, the pump on left has the Belzona 1812 (Ceramic Carbide FP) (the tan, gritty coating) on the casing and stuffing box, with Belzona 1331 on the impeller. The pump on the right has Belzona 2141 (ACR – Fluid Elastomer) (the black elastomeric coating) on the casing, stuffing box, and impeller.

By way of background (and courtesy of BHI), the 1812 Ceramic Carbide FP is an abrasion-resistant composite material used for repair of metal surfaces suffering from fine particle erosion, the 1331 Epoxy Coating protects against erosion or corrosion for equipment under permanent submersion and the 2141 ACR-Fluid Elastomer is a flexible cavitation and abrasion-resistant polyurethane elastomer used for coating metal and rubber components.
